In recent years amidst the burgeoning CBD industry, CBD Coffee has taken off in a big way. Hundreds of companies globally are producing CBD infused coffee and it is selling. Thousands of coffee lovers worldwide are switching to this healthy take on bulletproof coffee. But doesn’t it seem a little bit contradictory? A stimulant mixed with a relaxant. Why bother to take either? Won’t they just cancel each other out? Apparently not!
We took a trip down to Waterford to interview Tommy Keating, Chief Production Officer with GreenWay Hemp and Wellness.
Tommy explained why Greenway coffee is so popular. “First and foremost I am a coffee lover and a bit of a snob when it comes to coffee. When we first decided to introduce CBD coffee to the market, I knew that we couldn’t compromise the delicate notes of a well-roasted coffee with an overbearing hemp taste. So with a lot of testing of blends and infusion techniques, we came up with the perfect recipe. Helped along the way by Waterford’s oldest coffee roasters, Coffee House Lane, we now have our own blend of strong coffee enriched with CBD oil, grown and processed at the foothills of the Comeragh Mountains in the sunny southeast of Ireland.
“People love the taste but moreover they enjoy the feeling it gives. I’ll get into the science bit a little later but to cut a long story short, many Greenway coffee lovers describe a focused energy without the associated anxiety that coffee on its own can give. I can attest to this. If I have a couple of normal coffees I often feel a nervous energy, bordering on anxiety. CBD coffee on the other hand turns that energy into a positive force. You get the coffee kick but not the heeby-jeebies, perfect! I believe we should get hemp in all its forms into our diet and having it in coffee is just another way of balancing the all important endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system regulates many of our organs on a cellular level, balancing our bodies and helping us to maintain ketosis. Ketosis is when all the systems in the bodywork in synergy to create a healthy immune system and reduce inflammation in its many forms.
And now for the scientific bit!
As we all know, coffee’s active ingredient is caffeine, a stimulant that is used all over the world to kick start the day, follow a meal or even just an excuse to meet up socially. Coffee can range from mild to very strong, rated on a number system, 5 being the strongest. Coffee also contains a very important compound called theobromine and this is where the synergy happens.
CBD is a phytocannabinoid; it comes from the hemp plant, cannabis sativa. The body produces its own cannabinoids or endocannabinoids. Anandamide is our body’s own cannabinoid and theobromine, also found in chocolate, boosts the production of anandamide in the brain.
Coffee and CBD work great together. CBD is bi-phasic, i.e. in small amounts it acts as a stimulant and in large amounts it can cause feelings of relaxation. Greenway coffee has 10 mg in every cup and with the addition of the theobromine boost from the coffee you can be sure of a great tasting coffee with a positive energetic effect on the body.”
